Dr. Cynthia Corkern

Dr. Cynthia Corkern was recently honored along with the other eight (8) Correctional Education Association Teachers of the Year in Denver, CO. The Denver Conference Committee did an outstanding job of ensuring special events for all of the Teachers of the Year. Dr. Corkern was honored at a social hour with the Executive Board, the Gala dedicated to TOYs, and was recognized at the general meetings. Region VIII presented Dr. Corkern with a plaque, gift card, flowers, and various other gifts from our Region.

Dr. Corkern is a classroom teacher at Hinds County Detention Center in Raymond, MS. She encourages affirmations and a positive classroom climate conducive for learning as the keys used to inspire young men in her care to achieve their GED. She has developed a program where students rise above their negative environments and poor self-esteem to improve their academic and social skills.
